• Green Coffee Beans are coffee beans that have not been roasted. They are raw, unroasted seeds and its compound, chlorogenic acid, is the key component of green coffee bean that promotes weight loss. Traditional roasted and brewed coffee removes a significant amount of chlorogenic acid, making it less likely to have anti-obesity effects.
• What is Chlorogenic Acid?? Its an extract from green coffee bean referred as GCA that has antioxidant properties and the source of coffee’s anti-obesity effects along with caffeine. Its found in prunes, peaches, blueberries, tea and sunflower seeds. Chlorogenic Acid is thought to slow absorption of fat from meals as well as increase the metabolism of fat. It also promotes the formation of glucose in the liver, thus improving blood glucose levels.
• A 2012 study showed an average weigh loss of almost 18 pounds in a group of overweight adults (BMI > 25) over 12 weeks. The dose of Green Coffee Bean Extract ranged from 700 to 1050mg per day.
• What Dosage is most effective?? Products should have at least 700mg of green coffee bean extract, and the recommended dose is 400mg three times daily 30 minutes before meals in adults.
• Best Products?? Capsules should contain at least 45% chlorogenic acid or higher and contain the words Svetol or GCA on the label and there should be no fillers or artificial ingredients on the ingredient list.
• Side Effects from Green Coffee Bean Extract: None really but may Lower blood pressure. The bigger concern for side effects is when its combined with caffeine-containing products and stimulants. Consumers must look product labels for additional active ingredients in combination with green coffee bean extract so as to avoid potential side effects.
• Bottom Line:  Look for products that have at least 700mg of extract and contain at minimum of 45% chlorogenic acid per capsule. It has not been studied in children, so avoid. If you are allergic to coffee or caffeine, you should not take the product. Green Coffee Bean Extract looks promising for weight loss given the most recent study but not better than regular, consistant exercise and good diet.

• They are antioxidants that look similar to synephrine and capsicum- two supplements that have been used in several weight loss products over the years
• There have been no human studies, only 2 studies in rats that showed a decrease in fat in the liver and abdominal fat as well as an increase in norepinephrine-induced lipolysis (fat breakdown) when compared to controls over 10 week study
• The studies also showed a higher secretion of adiponectin in those rats given raspberry ketones vs. controls. Adiponectin is a protein that regulates metabolism, and the more you have or can secrete the fewer the fat stores.  In addition to the enhanced metabolism of adipoectin, raspberry ketones also showed increased activation of brown fat thermogenesis.
• Did you know that EXERCISE will also increase the levels of adiponectin, even more than raspberry ketones!!!! Its also not been proven that the higher levels of adiponectin by supplementing raspberry ketones leads to weight loss in humans, nor has it been proven to suppress appetite.
• What dosage of raspberry ketones should you take?? Nobody really knows!!! The rat studies used a 1% concentration of total daily caloric intake. Assuming the typical labeling by RDA of 2000 calories per day, you would need to take 200mg daily of raspberry ketones. Obviously, if you eat less calories, you wouldn’t need as much. Dosages can be taken as a single dose or split into twice daily.
• Side effects of raspberry ketones? Really don’t know…but since its similar to synephrine it may increase blood pressure and heart rate. The raspberry leaf, not ketones, could induce uterine contractions; however there is a concern that raspberry ketones may have estrogen-like properties that could be inappropriate for those with cancer who are sensitive to estrogen. Its All Speculative.
• THE BOTTOM LINE: Raspberry ketones may or may not help you lose weight but worth a try IN ADDITION to eating good and exercising. Don’t expect miracles from this supplement if you’re not going to excercise and change your eating habits. Also, raspberry ketones have only been studied in overweight rats (2 studies) so more detailed studies are needed to determine exactly how this supplement works for weight loss.
